     Field Trip
        Jim & Sarah Young Studio
     September 18, 2008
            ANA Meeting

The board meeting of September 18th was very short because the ANA group traveled to Van
Hollow Pottery Studio for a demonstration.Jerry Plumlee was our guide, leading us from
Springdale to Rogers, AR, where the studio is located.

Jim and Sarah Young are artist partners, each of them throwing beautiful pots. Their studio and
house are just as lovely. Sarah took a small group of us for a walk outside the studio to show
and explain to us the complete process the pottery goes through. This includes the kiln,
spray booths, and the raku kiln. In the studio, Jim was throwing a pot for the remainder of the
    group.

He asked Lu Banister to create the design on the pot by using her fingers. For the final
demonstration, Jim prepared a chicken for baking with his chicken baker pot. He first coated
the chicken with several herbs, and then poured wine in the stem of the pot, and the chicken
was then placed over the stem. The final touch was when Jim presented us with an already
cooked, delicious chicken to eat - just as Martha Stewart does!

Thank you Jim and Sarah, and Kathy Mayhue for making this trip
possible. It was a very fun trip.

      October Meeting Hosted
    Tania Knudsen
       by Dorothy Reif

A number of months ago I went to a show at the Arts
Center of the Ozarks in Springdale and enjoyed seeing
the art of three young women artists. I was most attracted
to the way Tania Knudsen worked. To my surprise, Tania
was our October 16th demonstrating artist, and the demo
was the most unusual one we’ve had so far. Tania gave a
talk about her  life experiences up to now, and the second
half of the demonstration she painted a non-objective painting.

Tania was born in Arkansas and graduated from the U of A.
Her paintings are in many private collections. Her early paintings
were in watercolor, but now chooses acrylic as her medium. Her
fortieth birthday was very recent, so she decided to celebrate it
again with us, using a pie.  She cut a piece for each of the five
experiences of her life. The pie slice was then given to a member
of the audience. As she talked, we were shown examples of her work. Her company is called Art At Work,
and her faux paintings are imitations of paintings using color and texture. In addition, her silk screened
Limited Edition Collector Art Scarf called Hey Boo also contributes to her income. Another slice of pie and
she mentioned that her time is also involved in talking to investors.

Tania enjoys painting unusual subjects. The pig series was on display,
and Green Eggs and Ham shows a big pink pig on a background collage
of green egg cartons. The non-objective painting she created in the
second half of the program began with a light wash and moved to
dividing the picture plane using yellow, green, and purple.

A book on composition mastering by Ian Roberts was suggested, and
links to additional artists and pertinent sites can be found on Tania’s
website:
www.taniaknudsen.com

I wish to thank Tania for the taste of art and pie. Thanks also to Kathy
Mayhue for arranging the demo by Tania. Come and be with us next
month to visit with another inspiring artist.

    Robert Andes
          November 20th Guest Artist

Robert Andes has always been interested in the work of artists who paint the human form, so this
remains his focus and usual subject. The traditions of figurative work remain important in art to the
present. He has enjoyed learning, using processes and techniques used by painters in the past,
incorporating them into modern subject, context, and sensibility. His intent is to create a picture
that is visually pleasing and captures people and their emotions through color and composition.

Robert says that although his work may raise
questions or offer some new perspective, any
psychological content is subtle, as he tries not to
shock the viewer. Rather, because he is interested
in introspection and quiet observation, he seeks to
convey a sense of silent contemplation and nudge
a viewer gently to a new space, a different vantage
point
